Stumbleupon is a great site for getting some extra traffic to a web site. Lots of people use Stumbleupon to provide traffic who are sometimes disappointed with the results. It’s usually a matter of not doing it right, however. Stumbleupon, when used properly can be a really great source of traffic, and there are times when it’s not the best thing to use. How can you know?

Seth Godin as usual offers up some excellent advice in a recent post where he points out that the New York Times is not the best source of news, nor is their analysis the best around either. What is important is the fact that it gets read by a vast amount of people. In fact, “everyone else” more or less. And that’s the reason why it’s a good thing to create something on the Internet that “everyone else” reads too.

US search results have been showing Google profiles at the bottom of the results page for searches that involve a personal name. The abbreviated information comes from Google profiles created by users and Google provides a link to the full profile. Links can also exist to allow searches for profiles on certain Web 2.0 sites, such as Linkedin, Facebook, MySpace and Classmates.

Is the Google ranking algorithm an accurate and fair way to rank web sites? Probably not. According to SEOBook, it’s nothing more than a popularity contest at its most basic level. Google even pretty much admits this. They look to others to see how authoritative a site is considered. It is through these proxy signals that Google decides who has authority and trustworthiness and who doesn’t, and of course, they are not always right. Popularity is one factor in determining authority and trust, but it is not the only one. It seems, however, to be the only one that Google can use right now.
