Michael Jackson’s untimely death last week was a shock to millions of fans. Even those who had little interest in the performer couldn’t help noticing that something major had happened. What has this to do with SEO, you may be asking. Normally not a lot, but Virginia Nussey on the Bruce Clay site has made a very fascinating comparison between Michael Jackson’s famous moonwalk and SEO. You have to read it to understand how that could be.

Do you actively seek backlinks from other sites? We all do if we want our sites to grow in the best way possible, but it isn’t always easy. We dream of getting a link with perfect anchor text from a PR9, but few of us succeed, if any. Is this the best way to go about the whole exercise? Maybe not, according to the SEOmozBlog. Maybe getting links from small websites can actually create a much bigger impact in the long run. SEOmozBlog explains it better:

Want to make some easy money? Yeah, you and a few billion others… Want to make some easy money on Google? Hmmm… That sounds more interesting! It isn’t all it sounds, unfortunately. Big Google could be saying one thing and doing another. Oh dear…

Do your links appear natural? Is it because you have worked to make them appear so? Why? You links should **be** natural, and if they are natural, then they certainly will appear natural. No, that isn’t complicated. It’s common sense, and Matt Cutts (the man with four “T’s” in his name) makes this simple but obvious point.

Google Maps is a good idea – in principle at least. Your natural SE listing, complete with address, is given a neat little map below it to show the searcher where you are located. That’s the theory at least. In practice it seems that many businesses in the UK are experiencing a map indeed below their listings, but not the right map. This happens when the place name in the UK also shares the same place name in the USA. Guess which country’s maps often shows up for the UK listings…

Do you think that Google, Yahoo and Bing are doing a good job? Yes, most of the time they are. Of course, when they fail to raise your brand new site to the top of the listings in 30 seconds flat you may be less flattering to them. However, last week all the search engines faced a most unusual day. Some of them thought they were under attack as queries for a single subject spiked massively. So, how di they cope with the breaking news of Michael Jackson’s sudden death?

And finally… What would you do with 9,000,000 page views in just two hours? Do you think you could find a way to monetise that many visitors? It equates to 7,300 hits a second. Even with only some well placed AdSense ads you could probably make a few dollars. It seems the New York Times didn’t made a killing off that amount of traffic, but they certainly received it this week.
