Stumbleupon is a great site for getting some extra traffic to a web site. Lots of people use Stumbleupon to provide traffic who are sometimes disappointed with the results. It’s usually a matter of not doing it right, however. Stumbleupon, when used properly can be a really great source of traffic, and there are times when it’s not the best thing to use. How can you know?
http://www.burnseo.com/blog/2009/06/maximize-traffic-with-stumbleupon/

We all love the idea of throwing up a monetised web site in say, two hours flat, then getting it indexed and ranked well soon after with no effort whatsoever – not even a few links. Impossible? Not really, but you do need to know how. Yes, back links are important and in time you probably should get loads of them, but for just getting indexed with a WordPress blog, try an XML Sitemap.
http://www.wolf-howl.com/seo/website-indexed-no-links/

What do you think of ICANN opening up the way to limitless numbers of top level domains? It isn’t a cheap option, and there’s no guarantee of getting the TLD you want, but armed with around $185,000 you can submit your TLD of your choice to ICANN and if successful, you can compete with Dot Com, the world’s most successful TLD. I’ll bet someone gets Dot Moc, and I also bet it nose dives into oblivion…
http://www.cornwallseo.com/search/2009/07/01/rob-kerry-speaks-on-internet-liberalisation/

How do you feel about blog comments and their usefulness? Google doesn’t seem to like them as they recognised the nofollow tag in 2005 as a way to stop what they termed “blog spam.” Maybe they were right, but maybe they were not. Blog comment conversations can be riveting reading when they happen right. In fact, they should be encouraged to happen right.
http://www.seo-scoop.com/2009/07/01/five-ways-to-turn-blog-comments-into-conversations/

Have you noticed a shrinkage in Google results? It’s the page that has shrunk. Well, to be honest, it’s not so much a shrinkage as a trimming, and it’s mostly in the wording that surrounds the results. Is there a reason? Who knows…
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-shrunk-its-search-results-page/11635/

Do you have dozens or even hundreds of micro sites, all earning a little something? Many do and they are happy doing it too. However, it does cost a bit to keep going. There’s a possible answer though…
http://www.evilgreenmonkey.com/blog/micro-site-seo-hosting.html

Does local search domination interest you? It should. Done properly, a business that appears organically near the top of a local search should do very well. However, not all business owners are aware of what they can do to increase their visibility online. There’s a lot they can do too.
http://searchengineland.com/its-all-about-local-organic-domination-21825

There are SEO companies, and then there are the other SEO companies. How do you know whether or not your chosen SEO company is a good one? It can be a problem, especially if you don’t know a lot about the business. However, there is a lot you can do to choose a good SEO company. Some of it is common sense, but some of it isn’t. This article might help:
http://www.seo-news.com/

And finally… One SEO company reveals in a post on its blog how they are often asked to review a site. They report that it’s an unfortunate fact that many such requests for review are made for sites that just don’t cut the mustard. They even give a few examples of how to get the basics right.

Seth Godin as usual offers up some excellent advice in a recent post where he points out that the New York Times is not the best source of news, nor is their analysis the best around either. What is important is the fact that it gets read by a vast amount of people. In fact, “everyone else” more or less. And that’s the reason why it’s a good thing to create something on the Internet that “everyone else” reads too.
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/07/everyone-else-reads-it.html

There are certainly a whole lot of “dont’s” in SEO. How many can you think of? And can you think of the most important ones? If you can think of a few, then that’s not too bad. If you can think of a great many, then the following link can probably be skipped. It’s SEOmozBlog’s dozen “dont’s” for SEO. You might learn something…
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/a-dozen-donts-for-seos

There’s a line of thought that says it good to be transparent in business. There’s another line of thought that says it’s not. Who is right? Both are, in a way. It could be argued that it’s fine to appear transparent, but it’s not good to be transparent. Here are the details.
http://www.seobook.com/structured-data-seo

Google has changed again. This time it’s all about brands. It’s not quite as simple as it seems at first glance, however. It’s not the brands per se that are being boosted, but rather because of the authority factors connected to such sites. It’s complicated, as these things usually are with Google, but here are couple of useful explanations.
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/how-search-volume-data-may-be-used-to-determine-brand-authority/
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/britains-top-brands-how-they-rank-on-google/

Needing to optimise for search engines in China? Google China is back online. They had a recent bit of bother with the Chinese authorities over Internet porn. Whether or not the Chinese people like it is not very clear, but the Chinese authorities certainly do not, and insisted that Google China get rid of it! They did and now it looks as if business is booming and set to boom even further.
http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2009/07/google-25-percent-china-ad-revenue.html

Can real time search engines be a benefit to your SEO efforts? Some think so, and they are probably right. What is a real time search engine, you may be thinking? Well, it’s a search engine that returns results that are truly up to the minute. Twitter is not one really, but it does to some degree act like one, or at least, it can sometimes be used as one.
http://www.seoservicesgroup.com/blog/2009/07/on-growing-demand-for-real-time-search-engines/13986/

Does your business need a blog? A short time ago the answer would have been a resounding “Yes!” It might still be, but not necessarily so. It all depends, really. Some businesses can benefit considerably from having a well kept blog. Other businesses may not benefit so well, or may even be held back to some degree. Should your business have a blog? Read on to find out…
http://www.dirjournal.com/articles/should-your-small-business-have-a-blog/

And finally… Fancy getting your very own TLD? Let’s face it, the .com TLD is doing rather well, as is the .net and the .org, as well as a few others. If you have the odd $185,000 to spare, you can choose your own TLD and submit it to ICANN’s approval process. You could end up being the proud owner of .bob, .tld or even .thisisatopleveldomain. Will your chosen TLD be worth it and someday challenge the dominance of .com? Probably not…

Michael Jackson’s untimely death last week was a shock to millions of fans. Even those who had little interest in the performer couldn’t help noticing that something major had happened. What has this to do with SEO, you may be asking. Normally not a lot, but Virginia Nussey on the Bruce Clay site has made a very fascinating comparison between Michael Jackson’s famous moonwalk and SEO. You have to read it to understand how that could be.
http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/archives/2009/06/five_ways_the_m.html

Do you actively seek backlinks from other sites? We all do if we want our sites to grow in the best way possible, but it isn’t always easy. We dream of getting a link with perfect anchor text from a PR9, but few of us succeed, if any. Is this the best way to go about the whole exercise? Maybe not, according to the SEOmozBlog. Maybe getting links from small websites can actually create a much bigger impact in the long run. SEOmozBlog explains it better:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/using-small-website-to-create-a-bigger-impact

Want to make some easy money? Yeah, you and a few billion others… Want to make some easy money on Google? Hmmm… That sounds more interesting! It isn’t all it sounds, unfortunately. Big Google could be saying one thing and doing another. Oh dear…
http://www.seobook.com/how-make-easy-money-google
http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=137587

Do your links appear natural? Is it because you have worked to make them appear so? Why? You links should **be** natural, and if they are natural, then they certainly will appear natural. No, that isn’t complicated. It’s common sense, and Matt Cutts (the man with four “T’s” in his name) makes this simple but obvious point.
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/affordable-link-building-service/

Google Maps is a good idea – in principle at least. Your natural SE listing, complete with address, is given a neat little map below it to show the searcher where you are located. That’s the theory at least. In practice it seems that many businesses in the UK are experiencing a map indeed below their listings, but not the right map. This happens when the place name in the UK also shares the same place name in the USA. Guess which country’s maps often shows up for the UK listings…
http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/google-maps-wrong-again.html

Do you blog? Would you like to know how to build a high traffic blog without killing yourself? Blogging is now an important part of SEO, so read on…
http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/06/29/how-to-build-a-high-traffic-blog-without-killing-yourself/

Do you think that Google, Yahoo and Bing are doing a good job? Yes, most of the time they are. Of course, when they fail to raise your brand new site to the top of the listings in 30 seconds flat you may be less flattering to them. However, last week all the search engines faced a most unusual day. Some of them thought they were under attack as queries for a single subject spiked massively. So, how di they cope with the breaking news of Michael Jackson’s sudden death?
http://searchengineland.com/michael-jackson-extraordinary-day-in-search-21641

And finally… What would you do with 9,000,000 page views in just two hours? Do you think you could find a way to monetise that many visitors? It equates to 7,300 hits a second. Even with only some well placed AdSense ads you could probably make a few dollars. It seems the New York Times didn’t made a killing off that amount of traffic, but they certainly received it this week.
http://www.searchenginejournal.com/how-to-change-your-domain-while-keeping-your-search-engine-ranking/11072/

Changing your site’s domain name will not only be a useful trick to know if you currently have a .yu domain, but it will be an essential trick to know on (or preferably before) September 30th 2009. The .yu domain is for the former Yugoslavia, so if you have any sites with this domain and you want to keep them running, refer to the previous news item. In the meantime, here’s Blogstorm’s take on the situation.
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/screw-yu-your-domain-is-going-to-be-deleted/

How can you succeed best in SEO? It’s a good question, and one that’s certainly been asked before many times. There’s no absolutes, but there is a general consensus on what works and what doesn’t, which way to turn and which way not to turn. The SEOmozBlog lists a useful 12 skills that have worked well in SEO. Maybe they could help you too.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-12-skills-that-have-served-me-best-in-my-seo-career

We’ve had a couple of weeks of political unrest in Iran following the elections there that the opposition claim were rigged. With so many people in Iran trying to communicate with the rest of the world, while the authorities were trying to stop them, it was interesting to see Google quickly roll out a Farsi Google Translate version. And of course, translating your original web content into other languages can be a useful addition to your basic SEO efforts. Matt Cutts (the man with four “Ts” in his name) explains the finer points of machine translation.
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-read-persian-farsi/

If you are an avid blogger and if you use Firefox as your browser, then the new Wordtracker Firefox Plugin for SEO bloggers should interest you. This useful plugin lets you do keyword research while you write your blog. No more need for switching from one program to another. Now you can monitor the number of times you type in a particular keyword phrase while you are writing the post. A quick glance will tell you and your train of thought needn’t be disturbed.
http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/wordtracker-firefox-plugin-seo-blogger.html

Do you have an active link building strategy? Perhaps you are careful about who links to you, or maybe you don’t really care as long as it’s a valid back link. That’s how most of us function. However, with a little bit of extra time spent analysing the sites that appear most often in the top search results you can find the best sites for providing you with a back link. Search Engine Land explains it better.
http://searchengineland.com/the-link-builders-guide-to-analyzing-serp-dominators-for-link-opportunities-21076

Do you struggle to find great content for your site? Maybe you write your own content, but find it a pain having to do all that research. You’re not alone… I’m sure your heard all the usual suspects when it comes to looking for new ideas, but here are a few strategies for finding original content that are refreshingly original.

Have you ever engaged in scalejacking? No, it isn’t anything rude. It’s a word coined by Dave Balter to describe Internet marketers who are always seeking greater size, volume and scale in everything they do. Seth Godin, the creator of Squidoo, argues that the Internet isn’t like that, or at least, it certainly should not be like that. He has a point…
http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2009/06/scalejacking.html

There are those who say ignore Google Page Rank; it’s largely meaningless anyway as it doesn’t update often enough. Then there are those who say Google Page Rank is everything; it’s the answer to how a page can rank high in the SERPs. Who is right? If you want a technical answer about sculpting Page Rank, with or without nofollow links, SEOmoz can help.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/google-says-yes-you-can-still-sculpt-pagerank-no-you-cant-do-it-with-nofollow

What are vanity URLs on 3rd party websites worth? About $10, according to SEOBook. Seems like they are right too. Wondering what a vanity URL is? It’s a URL that can be generated from someone else’s website that allows you to have a page there. Recently Facebook allowed anyone to obtain “…a customized link for your profile – affectionately known around the tech world as a vanity URL.” A good example with Facebook is where SEOBook reveal that someone else has the vanity URL of www.facebook.com/seobook presumably in the hope that it may be mistaken as being associated with the real SEOBook website. A quick look will tell you that it’s a pretty slim hope.
http://www.seobook.com/vanity-urls-3rd-party-websites-are-worth-almost-10

Perhaps the vanity URLs help, but whatever the reason, Facebook has for some time been the social network website of choice for most countries around the world. The good ole’ USA was the exception with MySpace holding the top spot – until now, that is. It seems Facebook has finally caught up with MySpace as being the most popular social networking site, something that’s not likely to change in the foreseeable future either.
http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2009/06/facebook-beats-myspace-in-the-us.html

Did you attend Google I/O 2009? No? Well, you still can, more or less, if you want to. Matt Cutts (the man with four “T’s” in his name) has a pretty fascinating video of part of the event on his blog. It deals with website reviews and you could learn a thing or two from the experts, which includes two other members of Google’s search quality team.
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/webmaster-site-reviews/

It seems that Google is ignoring Bing’s robot.txt file and is actually indexing search results from the new search engine. It all seems a bit strange…
http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/google-ignores-bings-robotstxt.html

Do you think that getting your money page links on the front page of Digg would be a profitable thing or not? According to BlogStorm Digg viewers will blindly click on anything on Digg’s front page – even when there are no clickable links. Hmmmm…
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/heatmap-digg-frontpage/

Last week’s post stated that Matt Cutts (the man with four “Ts” in his name) said that Google sees SEOs in much the same light as common criminals. Well, it turns out that he didn’t actually say that. He did in effect say that those who are optimising their sites to a high degree in an attempt to chase the money are at higher risk, but that’s not quite saying they are criminals. Here’s the way it was:

I have just been reading the post Online advertising spend rises on back of innovation on Zero Strategy, my personal thoughts are not that innovation is responsible for the increase in online advertising but the whole transparency and measurabilty of online marketing is the reason for this increase, I mean wouldn’t you rather know exactly each pound is doing for you?

Eva Berg-Winters sums it up very well with this quote.

“In terms of measurability and accountability of online advertising it is a medium that is very, very good at showing return on investment, especially in parts of it – especially in search but also in classifieds, less in display, but overall it is pretty good at showing that if you invest £1 in something what you get out of it,”

Lets get this straight though, businesses are still continuing to cut marketing costs and expenditure – it just means it is being allocated to the channels which are results orientated and transparent, a safer option perhaps??

This weekly article is all about SEO, but do you really understand it all? Most people don’t and even the real experts are always on a learning curve too, just staying a little bit ahead of the game. For that reason a free lesson in how to learn SEO in 30 minutes a day might appeal to you. You might be surprised at how much you learn too.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/learn-seo-in-30-minutes-a-day

Do you use alt tags in the code that references your images on your web pages? You should! Alt tags are not just for people who choose to surf with the image viewing capability turned off (does anyone still do that?), it’s for the search engines too. The search engines are robotic machines. They cannot think for themselves, although sometimes it seems they do. They can’t “see” an image, just the code that tells your browser where the image can be found, which of course should include an alt tag describing your image so that the search engine robots can read it. They may not be able to see, but they can read!
http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/why_alt_tags_are_important.html

Underscores or dashes? It has been a long time perplexing question that really seems to depend on which one you prefer to see. Matt Cutts, the man with four “T’s” in his name, said that dashes work best. Everyone rushed to change from underscores to dashes, just because the right-hand man of God, sorry… Google, said so. Hmmm… Maybe he was right, but then again…
http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/which-is-better-underscores-or-dashes.html

If you do a search for any UK government department sites, or any UK schools or universities, you may be surprised to notice that they have started to advertise such unusual items as viagra, or that they are even promoting pornography. Before you tut, tut, be aware that all is not what it might at first seem to be. Because some schools and universities, as well as government departments are using old technology that badly needs updating, hackers have been able to find a way in to amend descriptions and titles in some cases. Blogstorm has a few examples that would be comical if it wasn’t so tragic and avoidable.
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/malware-seo-hacking-hits-uk-government-schools-universities/

Do you Bing? It’s been two weeks since the world was exposed to Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing. The new Bing search page uses a three-column layout, and it’s for a reason too. It seems we are more likely to look over to the right-hand side if there is more to look at. And what’s in the right-hand column? Paid ads! This could be good, or even very good, for advertisers.
http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2009/06/bada-bing-microsofts-new-search-engine-could-lead-to-cha-ching-for-advertisers.html

I’m reminded of an old Scottish joke – OK, a VERY old Scottish joke.
Question: What’s the difference between Bing Crosby and Walt Disney?
Answer: Bing sings, Walt disnae (you need a Scottish accent here).
And it seems that a new Bing is all-singing once again.

Do you do SEO? If so, Google might just be seeing you in the same light as a common criminal. Yes, the sites that you do work on may be considered more suspect, according to Matt Cutts, the man with four “T’s” in his name, who pretty much openly said so at last week’s last week’s SMX Advanced. Interesting stuff! And you always thought of yourself as a law-abiding cyber citizen…

Well in the business of search engines - rankings are vanity, traffic is sanity and conversions most definitely are king.

The problem is that people all too often forget this logic when it come to an internet business, who really cares (in most circumstances) if you rank number one for the term ‘blue box’, if there are no searches for the term.

Any work gone into acheiving that ranking has all been in vain. It would have been better spent elsewhere on terms that people are searching for which would produce an ROI.

So unless your business has got bottomless pockets - focus all your efforts on the keywords that are going to produce an ROI. Its not rocket science just common sense.

After reading this blog post on Business Insider I felt compelled to write a quick post about the topic, being both an iPhone user and working in the Internet Marketing field with a heavy involvement in Mobile SEO.

In a nutshell Admob pretty much the leader in iphone ads can’t fill its advertising inventory, hardly a surprise when there are 17,000,000 iphone users world wide and over 25,000 apps and iphone users represent 1% of the total web traffic worldwide.

Dean Higginbotham summed it up quite well in the comments why iphone ads aren’t as well recieved.

Relatively speaking, a huge chunk of real-estate per page. It kills me when a page opens and the first thing I see if an inch of ad on a three inch screen — it sours the experience.

Some of the advertisers try masking the ad too, so if you click by mistake, your “payment” is again, relatively enormous (load times/hassle/general irritation) – loading the ad page, having that *oh crap* moment, then hitting “back”. More tech savvy users won’t have that happen much, but mobile devices are used by everyone.

And so did my namesake Dave

The normal built in aversion to clicking on a banner add is exponentially stronger on a mobile device where load times make this a costly detour. Furthermore, if the add is in an app then there is an additional layer of uncertainty as to what happens to the state of the app if the add is clicked. Does the app exit and open Safari? Could the app crash

I honestly feel that the CPM model is dying out slowly, the mobile internet is growing daily and will continue to do so as internet speeds and 3g coverage continue to increase and mobile devices just get better and better.

The mobile internet is still in its infancy but make no mistake it is going to be huge.

What are the best kind of keywords to target for articles on a web site designed to sell a product? There may be several differing opinions, but many would say that the kind of questions that people naturally ask about the problem that the product solves are a good start.

The next question could be, where can you find those kind of questions? One really good place to find real questions that people type in to the search engines is at Wordtracker Labs, Keyword Questions. Combine this resource with some of the other free to use keyword tools and you could have the best of all possible worlds.
http://labs.wordtracker.com/keyword-questions/

Do you use WordPress to build web sites? It can be so much more than just another blog. Increasingly, people from all over the world are turning to WordPress as an easy to use and well optimised solution straight out of the box for web site building. Like all good things, however, WordPress can be improved. It works great just as it is, but you can tweak it a little bit here and a touch there and end up with something really amazing. Of course, you’ll still have to do all the necessary off-site SEO things, but if you want all the on-page SEO taken care of, The Definitive Guide To Higher Rankings For Your Blog is a very good place to start.
http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

Do you understand Google’s Page Rank algorithm in its handling of NoFollow? You’re not alone. But maybe with so many conflicting views it’s wasted effort trying to figure it out in any case. Page Rank sculpting may be a power SEO technique, but if you’d like to understand it better, Search Engine Land has the details.
http://searchengineland.com/google-loses-backwards-compatibility-on-paid-link-blocking-pagerank-sculpting-20408

The Search Taxonomy is not a phrase we hear every day. However, getting inside the mind of the average searcher is certainly a very useful trick if you want your site to sell your product or service better. Knowing how the searcher is thinking should help to determine which keywords are likely to be used, and then targeting those keywords should bring the right results. That’s the theory at least.
http://www.seobook.com/search-taxonomy-getting-inside-mind-searcher

Is SEO still a bit of a mystery to you? Do you panic every time you set up a blog, wondering if you’re doing it right in the eyes of Mighty Google? Worry no more, for Matt Cutts, the man with four “T’s” in his name, and a Google employee who seems to know a thing or three, has a very interesting slide show on his blog entitled, “Straight from Google: What You Need to Know.”
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-for-bloggers/

What’s your favourite search engine? Could it be that you might be wooed over to Bing? They do have some great pictures as a backdrop – if you like shiny things. All in all it’s not a bad little searcher though, but does it have what it takes to make a serious dent in Big G? Time will tell…
http://www.bing.com/
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/ppc-local-and-what-people-think-about-bing/

And finally… Do you like free things? We all do. The web is littered with freebies, some great, some awful and most in between. At the upper end of the scale, this article entitled, “5 Free SEO Tools You’re Probably Not Using Yet” could be just what you’re looking for:
http://sem-group.net/search-engine-optimization-blog/5-free-seo-tools-not-using-yet/

New Twitter Research from Harvard Business Publishing suggests that the masses which are on Twitter don’t actually use it.

Internet marketing and technology people have been hyping it up because it is perfect for communicating in a very tight clickey industry which everyone wants to be a part of and get noticed - Twitter is perfect for this, these same people have pushed it onto their clients which has then sparked a media interest.

This media interest has got celebrities thinking “if i’m on Twitter in the long run it will get me extra exposure and more importantly extra $$$’s”. Make no mistake the celebs are using and promoting Twitter and it is having a knock on effect making everyone signup, and if Twitter was as useful to your average Joe as it is to the new age techie geek then Twitter would be looking to overtake Facebook and MySpace. The stats below tell quite a different story.

”Twitter’s usage patterns are also very different from a typical on-line social network. A typical Twitter user contributes very rarely. Among Twitter users, the median number of lifetime tweets per user is one. This translates into over half of Twitter users tweeting less than once every 74 days.”

“At the same time there is a small contingent of users who are very active. Specifically, the top 10% of prolific Twitter users accounted for over 90% of tweets. On a typical online social network, the top 10% of users account for 30% of all production.”

It appears that a small percentage of the total signed up Twitter users are the real core community and account for the impressive Twitter stats which are out and about and the majority of people get bored or have no interest in using it as a communication tool.

But thats not to say businesses can’t harness the power of Twitter, because where there is the consumer there is money to be made so don’t just set up an account for the sake of it set up an account with a clear strategy and goals in mind.

Confused by SEO? Perplexed by Page Rank? Alarmed by alogrithms? Perhaps you need The Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization. It isn’t new, but it’s been very popular since it first came out, and it’s being re-authored and re-built as we speak. Find out more for yourself:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/rewriting-the-beginners-guide-part-x-measuring-tracking-success

Everyone online is looking for a new competitive advantage. SEO is continually advancing, slowly but surely, and getting more and more sophisticated all the time. But could the new competitive advantage be something as simple as a natural human trait? Trust me on this; I think they may have a point:
http://www.seobook.com/trust-new-competitive-advantage

Do you use WordPress believing that the way it is constructed holds an SEO advantage? Thousands of people do and it has to be said that Wordpress blogs can do extremely well in the search engine rankings. Because of this you might be interested in attending the Wordcamp conference in San Francisco this coming weekend. It’s being organised by the people who created WordPress, so if you’re in the area, drop along!
http://2009.sf.wordcamp.org/

Would you like to succeed at SEO? I guess it depends on what your definition of SEO is. Maybe you want to rank at number one in Google for a long tail keyword that gets 50 searches a day and has little competition, or maybe you have set your sights higher and want to take on a big keyword that gets 5,000 searches a day, but has a ton of competition. Either way you can, according to the Red Evolution blog. It’s just a matter of good strategy and finding the right angle:
http://seo.redevolution.com/succeed-at-seo/

Google is experimenting again. I know, it never seems to stop. Sometimes it’s something good, but at other times it can be less so. This time they are experimenting with product images in snippets. Will it increase the click through ratio? Probably, is the likely answer to that.
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/google-experimenting-with-product-images-in-snippets/

And also from Blogstorm… Do you have a JavaScript code on any of your web site pages that offers the visitor to go back? Hmmm… Not good SEO practice. It can be if everything happens as you think it should, but all too often it does not.
http://www.blogstorm.co.uk/javascript-back-buttons-seo-dont-mix/

Something else that doesn’t seem to mix is social media and the office. It’s all about reputation, a company’s reputation, that is. Do you have disgruntled employees? Most companies do, and they can use social media to good effect, or good effect from their disgruntled perspective. It probably won’t seem like anything good from the company’s point of view though:
http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?R=1007109

“Like two peas in a pod.” It’s a common expression and it is used to describe two things that go together well. SEO and Usability fall into that category rather nicely. It’s just a little reminder that’s worth remembering.
http://www.antezeta.com/blog/seo-usability

Bing, Kumo or Kiev? Who knows, but it looks like anything from $80 million to $100 million will be spent on it. Not sure what it is, or what it might become? Do a Google for it!
I thoroughly agree with them apart from the fact that this particular campaign wouldn’t work so well for mobile users.

Some excellent stats to back-up why Mobile SEO is the future.

Dear Advertiser,

We noticed that you recently opted out of showing your AdWords ads on high-end mobile devices such as iPhone and Android phones (e.g. the T-Mobile G1).

You could be missing out on a large and growing chunk of valuable internet traffic by not advertising on high-end mobile devices – Consider these facts:

• There are over 17 million mobile internet users in the UK, about a quarter of the population (Mobile Data Association, Feb. 2009)

• iPhone users search 50x times more than the average “feature phone” users (Google internal)

• iPhone web traffic already represents 1% of all web traffic worldwide, and in the next two years alone, we expect search rates from high-end phones to exceed PC search rates of 2007 (Nielsen Mar 2008, RBC Investments Jan 2008, DC, comScore, IAB and Merrill Lynch Estimates, June 2008)

• Worldwide there are 4 million iPhone and T-Mobile G1 owners, over 1.4 million in Europe (Canalys, May 2009) • Awareness for mobile ads is 23% greater in iPhone users, and they are also 66% more likely to respond to mobile ads (Q4 2008 Mobile Advertising Report).

To make the most of such valuable exposure, we recommend that you opt back in to high-end phone targeting.

High-end phones have full html browsing capabilities, so you do not have to create a separate mobile website to take advantage of this opportunity. You’ll be able to display your standard AdWords ads and landing pages on these devices without having to modify them. Moreover, you can track the perfomance of these ads using Google Analytics or conversion tracking as usual. Please see the following link on how to track your performance:

http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en-uk&answer=107297

Opting back into high-end targeting is fast and simple: you just need to tick one box!

1. Log into Adwords and access the account that you want to opt into High End Device Targeting. Select all relevant campaigns and click “Edit Settings”, which will lead you to the Campaign Settings 2. In the “Network and Bidding” section there is an additional area that has options for “Device Platform”. “Device Platform” options include high-end phones such as the iPhone or Android phones (e.g. the T-Mobile G1 and Vodafone HTC Magic) 3. In the Device Platform area, please opt out of s. 4. Press Save and you are done!

In order to improve our offerings, we would like to understand why you have decided to opt-out of high-end phone targeting. Please complete the simple form below; it will take less than three minutes, we promise:
